There is a reason Americans in growing numbers are turning to alternative sources of news, such as blogs and the foreign press; the “mainstream media” (MSM) has shown transparent and persistent bias–at times even scandalously so–towards a Regime with which a very large majority of the American public vehemently disagrees.
Nile Gardiner of the UK Telegraph has written a splendid column on the extravagance of this Administration in the face of a souring economy. The “let them eat cake” sojourn of Michelle “Marie Antoinette” Obama is a very telling example of what is either pure arrogance or pure stupidity of the Obamas towards the people they purportedly “lead”. But the part of Gardiner’s column that really caught my eye was this:
The timing of this lavish European vacation could not have come at a worse moment, when unemployment in America stands at 10 percent, and large numbers of Americans are fighting to survive financially in the wake of the global economic downturn. It sends a message of indifference, even contempt, for the millions of Americans who are struggling just to feed their families on a daily basis and pay the mortgage, while the size of the national debt balloons to Greek-style proportions.
While the liberal-dominated US mainstream media have largely ignored the story, it is all over the blogosphere and talk radio, and will undoubtedly add to the President’s free falling poll ratings. As much as the media establishment turn a blind eye to stories like this, which are major news in the international media, the American public is increasingly turning to alternative news sources, including the British press, which has a far less deferential approach towards the White House.
The First Lady’s ill-conceived trip to Marbella and the complete disregard for public opinion and concerns over excessive government spending is symbolic of a far wider problem with the Obama presidency – the overarching disdain for the principles of limited government, individual liberty and free enterprise that have built the United States over the course of nearly two and a half centuries into the most powerful and free nation on earth.
Précisément! And while Gardiner does not dwell on the media question, it does stand to reason that once trust is lost by the public at large–in a government or even in the “news” spoon fed each day by Colombia-educated elitist cheerleaders for that government–it becomes very difficult to earn that trust back again.
Not only is the American public fed up with this President, I suspect they are becoming equally fed up with the Old Guard MSM too. One need look no further than the MSM’s plummeting ratings (exception: Fox News); or even to the newspapers–most of which are going under or cutting back severely–for whom the prognosis is even worse.
One can make excuses about the Internet or to persist in castigating the bloggers as scapegoats for the dismal popularity of the MSM–but my guess is that if any of the networks besides Fox were to scrutinize the Obama Administration’s near-criminal behavior even half as critically as they once scrutinized every microscopic bit of President Bush’s term, the sudden ratings surge which would then follow would be self-explanatory.
There is a reason Fox News’ nightly ratings are light years ahead of all the other cable news networks combined, and that reason has nothing whatsoever to do with the Internet or Bloggers or talk radio. The discerning public is choosing Fox in overwhelming numbers over the alternatives–that is a fact. Could this fact possibly be due to a widely held perception that Fox is the one place in Mass Media where free Americans can expect to get facts that are not so twisted distorted towards the left as to be rendered unrecognizable?
For all those people and elitists who once used the slogan “It’s the economy, stupid“… against Republicans (how ironic is that), but yet seem to be clueless about why no one wants to watch their slanted coverage of the “news” anymore, I offer a new slogan for consideration: It’s the TRUTH, stupid.
When it comes to relying on news to manage one’s daily affairs, trust is everything; and for a majority of the MSM the people’s trust is gone. The media elites–who have “played ball” with the Democrats and “looked the other way” when stories popped up that did not fit their narrative–have now gotten their coveted access to “the inner circle”. Believing they were sailing on an “unsinkable” ship, the elites have been living the high life cruising on the USS Obama.
Unfortunately for them–and perhaps fortunately for the rest of us–that ship has hit a very large iceberg called “Truth” (others call it names like “The Constitution”), and that “unsinkable” ship is taking on serious water as the MSM elites watch helplessly. Almost 100 years ago, the elites boarded the Titanic beleiving that they could not be stopped. Like today’s elites, they were in for a rude awakening.
Attention MSM: Ice Warning! November approaches.
And still, “the band played on…”
